How to MUN

HabsMUN is an exciting experience that helps you develop your public speaking, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Whether you’re new to MUN or an experienced delegate, public speaking is one of the most important aspects of the conference. Here are some tips to help you improve your speaking skills and make an impact in your next MUN session.

Know Your Country and Topic Inside and Out

Before you speak, it’s essential to fully understand both your country’s position and the topic you’ll be discussing. Research your country’s history, foreign policy, and any relevant news. This background knowledge allows you to speak with authority and defend your country’s stance confidently.

Keep Your Speech Organized

When you speak at MUN, you want your message to be clear and easy to follow. A well-structured speech will help ensure that your ideas come across effectively. Start with a strong introduction that briefly explains your country’s position. Then, move into the main body of your speech where you present your arguments, backed by facts and evidence. Finish with a conclusion that summarizes your points and suggests a solution or calls for action.

Use Diplomatic Language

MUN is a space for diplomacy, so it’s important to use professional and respectful language. Even if you disagree with another delegate’s position, express your disagreement diplomatically. Instead of saying, “That’s a terrible idea,” try something like, “While I understand your perspective, I believe there are alternative solutions that better address…” This constructive dialogue shows that you are engaging respectfully with the committee.

Be Mindful of Your Body Language

Your body language is just as important as your words in public speaking. Stand tall with your shoulders back to exude confidence. Use purposeful gestures to emphasize your points, and make sure to smile and maintain eye contact with your audience. Positive body language will help you seem more approachable and credible.
